In a Galaxy Far Far Away

I remember the day when I saw Star Wars in the theater. I remember the day my friend skipped school to go and see The Empire Strikes Back on opening day. I remember having my fair share of Star Wars trading cards (forget baseball cards, movie cards was where it was at for me). Then of course, I wept when I read Special K's post. You see I came to the archives thing too late to have saved all that good stuff and the realization that there was money in memorabilia.

This was soon followed by a story on CNN (CNN? Really?) about those other must haves of my childhood, Wacky Packages. When my father moved out of the house I grew up in, my bedroom door was bedecked with a number of stickers, including several Wacky Packages stickers. I was momentarily tempted to take the door with me.

Then I watched with amusement, a child the same age as my son, explain Star Wars.

Today is the first day of school in New York state (always the Wednesday after Labor Day). Here in Maryland, where I live now, kids went back to school last week. I long for the days of not having to worry about things other than what my mother packed for my lunch and whether my homework was done. Some days, being a grownup ain't all it's cracked up to be. Wait, is that the bell from the ice cream man? I gotta go.

The dude and I overheard a three women about our ages talking about how they wanted to be 18 again. Dear god, NO! I wouldn't want to be a kid again either; you can't run off to Bermuda when you're a kid. You can't settle in with a cold one (though my sister used to). There are many pleasures to being an adult that certainly outweigh the freaking angst of being young.

"But don't talk back to Darth Vader, he'll getcha" has to be the funniest thing I've heard out of three year old in a long time. I had to beg my parents to let me see Star Wars; my father finally took me in November--6 months after it opened. He was pretty overwhelmed at the special effects, as I recall...
And as for Maryland schools, there was a time when school opened the day after Labor Day, but that all changed when I was in middle or high school. And it was okay, because we got a day off school in September to go to the county Fair--now that's a good academic calendar day off!

Anna - but the innocence? sometimes, it would be nice. I need some sort of hybrid life.

Philly - we were going to go to the fair, but a certain TS may have derailed that. We'll have to see.

I was never innocent.

Speaking of the ice cream man, Eddie Murphy's "Delirious" was recently released on DVD & is winging its way to my house even as I type. ;)
